Fät, purple carrots and a trip to the Viaduct

Fät, purple carrots and a trip to the Viaduct

I went to the Farmer’s Market down in Zürich today and, as usual, I came away with more vegetables than I can probably eat. Everything looked so fresh and beautiful that I just couldn’t help myself.

I got some gorgeous and crisp looking rhubarb, along with some strawberries. Things in Switzerland are typically only available seasonally so I take full advantage of that and buy it while I can. Maybe I’ll make another Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble or a pie or some jam or maybe I’ll even make something non-desserty with it.

I couldn’t leave without getting some beets. I absolutely love beets. I haven’t made beet chips with the dehydrator in awhile or I could just roast them or use them in a salad.

I picked up two kinds of carrots; regular orange ones and purple ones. I can’t wait to cut into those!

I was happy to find bok choy since I don’t always find it at my supermarket.

Spinach!!! A huge bag of fresh spinach (which will sadly cook down to next to nothing).

After wandering around the Farmer’s Market and stopping off for a coffee in a cozy cafe, we headed over to the Viaduct. The Viaduct is a trendy shopping area under some train tracks. Have a look…

The Viaduct

The Viaduct

They sell a lot of organic products and there are several small vendors selling things like specialty oils, balsamic vinegar and wines. There is a butchers shop and a fish shop as well as a few little bakeries.

We came across this interesting product and, of course, we had to get it. It’s pure organic cocoa butter (in kind of a powdered form) that can be used in cooking. I’ll write a post about it once I’ve used it.

FAT!! Fat in a can!

We got some pork belly and some sugar free, nitrate free organic sausage.

It wouldn’t be a shopping trip unless we found some chocolate 🙂

I love good dark chocolate

I also picked up some organic (bio) butter made from raw milk from grass fed cows.

This is the brand of tea we use for our home brewed kombucha. The tea is organic and the bags are unbleached.

The Viaduct has a nice little restaurant which is very popular for brunch on the weekend. We had one more coffee before heading for home with all of our goodies.

  1. What a beautiful bunch of delicious food you were able to get! I’m looking forward to hearing more about that fat! That butter must taste heavenly! I just love when food can be so exciting! Thank you for sharing! PALEO!!!!

    • Hi Angela,
Yes, I love beautiful food and get excited when I find new and interesting things. I’ll post about the FAT after I have used it a bit. It’s 100% cocoa butter that’s just shaved into like a granule texture. It is paleo, it is organic and apparently it’s quite good for cooking with and doesn’t spatter. And yes, the butter is lovely 🙂

  2. You must be a bazillionaire to be able to afford all that stuff from the Viadukt!

Super interested in the butter, I have seen that brand of yoghurt at Migros but never the butter.

    • HA! I wish I was a bazillionaire 🙂 Most of the stuff I got was from the Farmer’s Market at Bürkliplatz. I got the Fät, the chocolate, the butter, the porkbelly and sausage and the tea at the Viaduct. I’ve only ever found the butter at the the Viaduct and I’ve also seen it at the cheese stand at the Bürkliplatz market. Most of the time I just shop at Migros 🙂

      • Hi!
I’m also from switzerland and very excited that I found this blog!

I just wanted to say that you can find this butter also at a store at Hauptbahnhof, Zurich. I forgot the name but it’s the small shop that sells tons of specialities just beneath the tram stop from the numbers 3, 14.
They also have very tasty goats milk, unfortunately not raw though.

        • Hi Anna,
Thanks for the information 🙂 I’m thinking I’ve seen it at Glubus and at a small little bio laden in Uster, too. I’m glad you found Swiss Paleo 🙂

  3. I am so excited! I will be in Geneva from May 16th to the end of the month. I’m looking forward to shopping at Migros and picking up fresh produce for our hotel room. I’m told I do not have to worry about GMO food in Switzerland like I do in the US. Nice! I’m hoping to find a farmer’s market like you visited. Do you suppose it would be possible? I found you on Facebook and have enjoyed your comments and viewpoint so very much as I journey on this Paleo lifestyle! Thank you!

    • Hi Sue,
I hope you have a wonderful trip to Geneva (and I hope our weather will cooperate!). Have a look here for markets in the Geneva area:
      http://laughinglemon.ch/food-wine-info/market-locations/

Also, there is a lovely little town called Divonne-les-Baines which is just across the border in France. They have a wonderful market all through the town on Sunday mornings. Drop me a line after your trip and tell me how it went 🙂

  4. Oh my goodness, what a beautiful place to shop! I’m excited to see what you come up with using those ingredients! 🙂

    • Well Rach, I can tell you that the chocolate didn’t last long and got eaten as is. It didn’t last long enough to make anything exciting with it. I did do something unusual with the rhubarb and I’ll be posting that up soon.

  5. I absolutely love that the fat in a can label reads INTELLIGENT COOKING! wow!

    • Me too!! It caught my eye immediately and I made a bee-line for it to check it out. And then, of course, I had to buy it 🙂

  6. Wow such a beautiful place to shop! I’m really gone check this place out very soon(hopefully)
I haven’t been commenting but at list once or twice a week i cook your food, your sweet potato cups are a

Btw last Sunday i had your Rabbit leg recipe from nom nompaleo, it was delicious!
Thanks for all this cool recipes!

    Have a nice day!

    • Hi Christian!! How lovely to hear from you. I was seriously just thinking about you this morning as I was responding to other people’s comments and I was wondering how you were doing 🙂 Rhubarb on it’s own is very sour which is why it’s often paired with other sweet fruit and cooked to bring out some sweetness. I’m always so happy to hear that you are enjoying my recipes 🙂
      All the best,
      Lisa

      • Oh that is so nice of you! I was just busy with the kids! I have 2 small kids, soon to be 6 and 3 years old! They both keep me in my toes the whole day! Of course i really enjoy spending time with them.

I did make the Strawberry Rhubarb Crumble yesterday and it was a hit. Everyone one loved it!

        • Wow, a 6 and a 3 year old must keep you very busy!! I’m happy to hear that everybody enjoyed the crumble 🙂 Do you know the website http://www.paleoparents.com ? They have lots of kid friendly recipes.

  7. I hope this doesn’t sound weird and stalker-ish, but I would love to meet up with you at the Viadukt sometime, have a chat, and then shop for a few supplies 🙂
