Chicken Gyros

After we made (and loved) Naan Bread to go with some Tikka Masala a few weeks back, Mr. Swiss Paleo’s head has been filling with ideas of how we could use this naan bread in other recipes. We both love Gyros, so it wasn’t long before we decided this would be our next recipe to try.
We had the best gyros ever at this little place in Istanbul, Turkey last year. We walked past the guy in the morning as he was making his meat spyre and we came back again in the afternoon and ate some. Traditional gyros are served in a soft flat bread and they put french fries in with the meat, tomato, onion and yogurt sauce. We were good and skipped on the fries and bread and just had it served straight up on a plate and it was still delicious.
Gyros in Istanbul, Turkey
Here’s what we did to make our own gyros at home.
Our homemade gyros
Ingredients
- 4 chicken breasts
- 4 Tablespoons olive oil
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 recipe of Naan Bread
- 1 recipe of tzatziki sauce
- 1 tomato, sliced
- 1 red onion, sliced
- Handful of torn lettuce leaves
What to do
For the chicken part:
- Place the chicken and all of the other ingredients together in a bowl or zip lock bag and marinate in the fridge for a few hours.
Marinate the chicken
- We grilled the chicken over the BBQ, but you could also broil it in the oven.
- Slice to fill your gyros.
For the tzatziki sauce:
We made our own sauce (recipe here)

For the flat bread wrap:
We followed our naan bread recipe, but increased the yogurt/coconut milk from 3/4 cup to a full cup.
