Chicken Gyros
After we made (and loved) Naan Bread to go with some Tikka Masala a few weeks back, Mr. Swiss Paleo’s head has been filling with ideas of how we could use this naan bread in other recipes. We both love Gyros, so it wasn’t long before we decided this would be our next recipe to try.
We had the best gyros ever at this little place in Istanbul, Turkey last year. We walked past the guy in the morning as he was making his meat spyre and we came back again in the afternoon and ate some. Traditional gyros are served in a soft flat bread and they put french fries in with the meat, tomato, onion and yogurt sauce. We were good and skipped on the fries and bread and just had it served straight up on a plate and it was still delicious.
Here’s what we did to make our own gyros at home.
Ingredients
- 4 chicken breasts
- 4 Tablespoons olive oil
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 recipe of Naan Bread
- 1 recipe of tzatziki sauce
- 1 tomato, sliced
- 1 red onion, sliced
- Handful of torn lettuce leaves
What to do
For the chicken part:
- Place the chicken and all of the other ingredients together in a bowl or zip lock bag and marinate in the fridge for a few hours.
- We grilled the chicken over the BBQ, but you could also broil it in the oven.
- Slice to fill your gyros.
For the tzatziki sauce:
We made our own sauce (recipe here)
For the flat bread wrap:
We followed our naan bread recipe, but increased the yogurt/coconut milk from 3/4 cup to a full cup.
Putting it all together:
Fill your bread with sliced chicken, sliced tomatoes, red onion, lettuce and tzatziki sauce and enjoy!

Oh these look so good!!! Will try and make them this week…
They were delicious! However, to feed your family….you would need to like quadruple the naan recipe (or make a ton of other side dishes) π
Oh my gosh! These look PERFECT. I am going to have to give them a try this week π Yum, thanks, was just craving gyros π
Hi Leanna,
I hope they turn out for you π You can spice them and fill them to suit your fancy however you like.
Thank you for this amazing recipe Lisa! I made these for dinner tonight and they tasted great! I haven’t had a gyro since i found out I had celiac disease over a year ago. This was such a treat! Thanks again!

My 12 y/o daughter/aspiring chef made this recipe for us last night. It was absolutely amazing! We used ground beef b/c we had it and look forward to using chicken. Next time. The naan bread was the best paleo bread I’ve ever tasted!
Your food photography is beautiful too! : )
Hi Candace,
Wow—lucky you to have your daughter cooking for you π I think it’s so great for kids to get involved in the kitchen. Thanks for the compliment on the photography, but I really have absolutely NO skills. I point and shoot and sometimes I just get lucky π
