A New Farm Find

Back at the start of summer I found a great farm in my area. It’s only about 5-10 minutes drive away and I can’t believe that I didn’t find it sooner. I’m really excited about this place because not only do they have bio grass fed beef, they have bio pastured pigs. The farm has a little store that you can come shop at. They have a full on meat counter with fresh meat and they also have a freezer section. You can also get huge eggs from pastured chickens. The farmer’s wife was running the farm store during our visit and she was very friendly and helpful. Here is a link to the farm and what they have on offer.

I ordered 1/8 of a pig and 1/16 of a cow while I was there and it should be ready for me next week. This is what 1/4 of a pig looks like. It’s priced at 23 francs per kilo and you get a variety of cuts. You can also choose which cuts you prefer.

When the store is closed, you can still get eggs anytime from the egg refrigerator. As with many things in Switzerland, it works on the honor system and you just leave money in the milk jug to pay for your eggs.

Here is what I came home with to tide me over until my delivery is ready. The bratwurst were some of the best I’ve had. That bag of stuff is pig fat so I can render my own lard and make some of the delicious lardy recipes in Beyond Bacon. You can read my Beyond Bacon cook book review here.
