A New Farm Find

A New Farm Find
  • Sumo

Back at the start of summer I found a great farm in my area. It’s only about 5-10 minutes drive away and I can’t believe that I didn’t find it sooner. I’m really excited about this place because not only do they have bio grass fed beef, they have bio pastured pigs. The farm has a little store that you can come shop at. They have a full on meat counter with fresh meat and they also have a freezer section. You can also get huge eggs from pastured chickens. The farmer’s wife was running the farm store during our visit and she was very friendly and helpful. Here is a link to the farm and what they have on offer.

I ordered 1/8 of a pig and 1/16 of a cow while I was there and it should be ready for me next week. This is what 1/4 of a pig looks like. It’s priced at 23 francs per kilo and you get a variety of cuts. You can also choose which cuts you prefer.

When the store is closed, you can still get eggs anytime from the egg refrigerator. As with many things in Switzerland, it works on the honor system and you just leave money in the milk jug to pay for your eggs.

Here is what I came home with to tide me over until my delivery is ready. The bratwurst were some of the best I’ve had. That bag of stuff is pig fat so I can render my own lard and make some of the delicious lardy recipes in Beyond Bacon. You can read my Beyond Bacon cook book review here.

  1. Brilliant thank you! Will forward the link to my husband asap. He is a bit under the weather and needs cheering up.
We Have been wanting to make lard for quite some time now. Currently making minced meat out of beef chuck in the Kitchen Aid “meatwolf”.

    • Hi Miriam,
Hope your husband is feeling better. I’m jealous of your kitchen aid—wish I had one.

      • Lisa, it’s just a small food processor, we got it from coop for about 400.- for breadmaking back in the day… now found a great meatwolf for it (made by Jupiter I believe)
Thanks, husband is feeling better. He had a puffy eye from a moskito bite. Almost gone now. We heal so quickly on paleo.

  2. Hi Lisa,
Thanks for the info, it sounds amazing. I will definitely try to get to this farm.
Do you know if they sell organ meats too and if they are 100% grass fed? And do you think their sausages are sugar free? I have been struggling a lot to find sausages with clean ingredients here, all of them have “maltodextrine” and “dextrose” stuff, even those bio ones…

    • Hi Kamola,
I didn’t ask for organ meats while I was there, but I would assume that they have some or that you could order ahead for some with the next scheduled butchering. They are a certified bio farm which in Switzerland means that their animals must have a minimum of 8 hours of grazing opportunity everyday and that a minimum of 90% of their feed must come from grazing. The sausage does have a small amount of dextrose (which is glucose)but no preservatives, chemicals or E numbers. I tend to make my own sausage and only rarely buy it from the farm ( I made 5 kilos just 2 weeks ago) but I don’t worry too much about the dextrose when I’ve bought farm sausage (figure the amount of sugar is less than I would get in some dark chocolate). On another note, I have scobys now. I can leave one in my mailbox for you and you can drive by and pick it up. Just email me at lisa@swisspaleo.ch to let me know the day you might plan on picking it up and I can give you my address.
