Meet Our New Neighbors

Meet Our New Neighbors

Every summer, the farmer down the road moves some of his cows to the field across the street from our house. I love it when the cows arrive. I can sit and watch them from my yard and I can go down and pet them. Best of all though…they wear bells in true Swiss style and I get to hear the sound of their bells all day. It’s not annoying or loud like you might think. I find it to be really relaxing and I love the sound of it.

Here come the cows!

Last Friday, Mr. Swiss Paleo was cooking up a few steaks out on the BBQ and he came pounding on the glass door and told me to grab the camera and “Come quick!”. One of our cows had just had a baby!

The other cows got pretty excited and ran around a bit clanging their bells in their excitement at the birth. But then, they just went back to eating their grass as if nothing out of the ordinary was going on.

The mother cow spent about an hour licking her baby clean. He made several attempts to stand on his new little legs and finally managed it (within an hour).

He had a little trouble figuring out where the milk was at first, but it didn’t take long.

By Sunday evening (two days after the first baby was born), we had three adorable baby cows grazing and playing across the street.

  1. The irony of cooking steaks….Love the cow pics!

    • Yes, that’s exactly what my daughter said. This is why I could never be a farmer…all of my cows and pigs and chickens would have names and I would never be able to eat any of them πŸ™‚

  2. And you are itching to move??!? I want to live where you live! πŸ™‚ That is just soooo precious. Thank you so much for sharing!

    • Hi Sonia, It’s true, I would probably be crazy to go because it is pretty wonderful here. You can visit anytime πŸ˜‰ (especially since I know you’re a good cook!)

  3. This is one of the reason i LOVE Switzerland, every were you drive their is a farm and forest! Around us we have like 5 farms! In front of my daughter kindergarten there was 3 baby cows, we pet them last Thursday when we go to the farms market! Now my youngest begs to go for a walk so that she can pet the baby cows! They both keep asking me ” we don’t baby cows yeah mama”
